Overview

Out of This World Science

Grove Primary is an all through primary school with excellent facilities for pupils from the ages of five to eleven.

Grove Primary offers the opportunity for children to remain in a family atmosphere across both phases of their primary education. The staff members are friendly, caring and committed professionals who work very hard to provide the best possible opportunities for all pupils. Teachers and support staff work together to promote continuity between the year groups and Key Stages and this ensures an easy transition between infants and juniors without the need to change school.

Working with the British National Space Centre the team will invite students in years 3, 4, 5, and 6 to create an experiment that British-born private space traveller Richard Garriott will conduct on the International Space Station in October 2008. Since experiments will take place in zero gravity students will be encouraged to be really imaginative.

This opportunity to create science on the ISS provides a wonderful way of exciting the pupils' interest in science. It provides an excellent opportunity to involve scientists in leading lessons, which will then develop the teachers' professional knowledge. The resources developed during the project will be shared with other schools.

The judges commented, "This is a very unusual topic area and a unique opprtunity for the pupils involved. The project offers a great opportunity to innovate and it clearly engages parents, pupils and other schools."

Each of the Finalist Teams are given the support of a mentor when they begin to implement their proposal. Click here to find out about the mentors.
