Overview

Ashton Comunity Science College is an 11-16, co-educational, comprehensicve school which has achieved Specialist Status in Science. The school's aim is to help parents prepare their children for adult lives in a rapidly changing world. To achieve this, the college provides a broad and stimulating curriculum, sets the highest standards of work and behaviour and encourages students to reach out for these standards with confidence.

In developing a scheme of work for the brand new Additional Applied Science GCSE, it became clear to the team that the subject is poorly resources in the Internet compared to more established science resources. Since the course requires a great deal of research in order to write portfolios, it is clear that a quality resource linking students to scientific industries would be of great benefit both to those students and also the industries that are eager to aquire high quality employees. The resource will be used lower down the school to ignite interest in the application of science.

The judges commented, "The proposal shows good development across different age ranges with learning taking into consideration the differing needs of pupils. The idea embeds well in the school curriculum and the focus on work experience and apprenticeships is very well concieved."
