Overview

Wind turbines

The team will build a small-scale wind tunnel for children to safely test and evaluate different blade configurations for wind turbines. Children will be able to quickly develop models and test their efficiency by recording electrical output at different wind speeds. Initial models will be made from 150mm diameter aluminium discs.

The aim is to scaffold creative thinking to problem solving in finding efficient turbine designs and relate their work to the real life development of the Gazelle Wind turbine.

The judges commented, "The proposal offers very good science and engineering opportunities for pupils and good links between both. There is great potential for in-depth scientific enquiry with lots of potential for data gathering and manipulation."

Each of the Finalist Teams are given the support of a mentor when they begin to implement their proposal. Click here to find out about the mentors.
