Overview

Debating Darwin

Prenton High School for girls is a single sex school with 700 students based in Birkenhead near the river Mersey and is recognised as a beacon of excellence in Science, Mathematics and the Visual Arts, and has been awarded specialist status in Science and the Visual Arts.

Taking evolution as its theme, the team will produce cross-curricular learning resources ranging from science to art to film. The resources will be created with 21 gifted and talented students from neighbouring schools. The students in teams along with their teacher will produce creative learning resources that stimulate debate, which they will then take back to their schools to share with their classes.

Through designing and building resources the team hope to encourage the development of key skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork and problem solving among their students. As well as creating a forum for teachers to share good practice, which will continue after the project has finished.

A photographic exhibition of the work along with the reconstructed primate fossil skulls will take place in View 2 gallery in Liverpool to mark Darwin's 200th Birthday in February 2009. This will be followed by a public debate in April.

In the summer term, the team hope to extend the project and will work with park rangers, to take local primary school children on a "Voyage of Discovery " to Birkenhead Park.

The judges praised this innovative proposal for being a "good topical idea that is imaginatively tied in" to the upcoming 200th Anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.

Each of the Finalist Teams are given the support of a mentor when they begin to implement their proposal. Click here to find out about the mentors.
