Overview

Light Spectacular

Bromley is a large London Borough with a very large and diverse student population and is justifiably proud of its outstanding schools in the area. The Bromley Physics Group was set up in July 2007, financed by a Rolls Royce Special Merit Award and further funding from Bromley 14-19. Over the year it has enjoyed trips from Leeds University to CERN running continuing professional development courses for staff along side student activities. St. Olave's Grammar School, Langley Park Girls School and Bromley College formed a partnership for this proposal that investigates Light. Geometrical Optics has made a return to the GCSE syllabus after a very long absence, making light a topic that is again covered from Keystages 1 to 5.

This project will study the amazing phenomena of Light. The team have devised a superb array of activities for each year group to present and display at the two schools and College of Further Education to educate and engage. Via the new Bromley Physics Group they can involve all schools across the Borough.

The team will invite in specialist speakers to amaze and inspire on Optical Illusions, the use of light in commercial ink production and polarisation. Activities have been included that are rarely conducted in schools, ranging from Gemstone Spectroscopy to reproducing Fizeau's famous experiment to calculate the speed of light.

The Judges commented, "This is an Innovative and practical idea that will show real benefits for those involved. The proposal shows real science building on a previous Special Merit Award. The project is underpinned by good teamwork and involvement from other schools."
