Overview
Fit for Science a project for life
St Stephen and All Martyrs' C of E Primary School is situated very close to Bolton town centre, but has a pleasant aspect, being near Leverhume Park. The school has 180 children on roll. Like the area, the school has a very diverse population and is a very exciting place to teach and learn.
The project will involve Key Stage 2 pupils working with real scientists on a long-term project to investigate fitness levels through scientific experiments. Pupils will learn about scientific enquiry the importance and benefits of fitness and produce interesting experiments that can be used by other pupils and schools in their own investigations.
St Stephen and All Martyrs' school has very positive experiences of using practical science to motivate our pupils and raise their understanding and enjoyment of science. After discussing the feasibility of the project with their partners it was decided that the team could use scientific enquiry to focus their pupils on the benefits of health and fitness.
In addition working with Scientists from Bolton University and Bolton Wanderers F.C. in developing exciting experiments the pupils will gain a greater awareness and appreciation of science.
The Judges commented that, "This is an unusual idea in a current and relevant topic area. The project is very inclusive as all pupils of all abilities will be involved. The team is very strong with good community involvement through the local football club. The evaluation and monitoring of the project is well conceived and should lead to some interesting results."
