Art & Perfume

Worksop College was founded by Nathaniel Woodard in 1890, and still hold true to the aims of the founder, to achieve the highest attainable academic standards set in the context of outstanding pastoral care, breadth and challenge, leadership, and harmony.

The project aims to be an inspirational demonstration of the practical uses of chemistry beyond explosions!

The project will be split into 2 working groups - 1 aiming to recreate Cima's 'The Incredulity of St Thomas', the other to synthesise a perfume from scratch. Each group will also look into chemical analysis, possibly in partnership with local universities.

Students will produce a pallet of different pigments using traditional chemistry, problem solving to see how the pigments can be used, e.g. use of oil / water-based media.

The second group will produce a range of synthetic esters and extract essential oils using different methods, e.g. enfleurage, steam distillation.

The Judges commented, "This project will provide a good introduction to chemistry projects for pupils. The idea shows a good mix of practical work and research. This has the opportuntiy of extending the students' learning beyond the normal curriculum."
