The perfume group has started to research the science behind perfume blending. Two members of the group are in the process of getting onto a perfume making course. The extraction of essential oils lesson has been taught by the sixth form to pupils lower down the school. Lesson was extremely good and several of the lower school pupils were interested in the groups activities. One side group of the perfume group have looked at devising a sensory test to perform on the school. This should be ready by next month. Further analysis of the essential oils was carried out.

With some further guidance from “our man in the industry” the group has nearly got the “perfect” combination of binding reagent to base paint to pigments. Results so far have been good and several test boards have been made. Quality of the finish is an issue. Particle size of pigment is an issue; present method of using a mechanical crusher and then pestle and mortar is leaving the particle too large and the paints have an uneven grain. Members of the lower sixth have become interested in the activities of the upper sixth and several have now joined in the research and practical sessions on Friday afternoons.
