Diary Entry - March

Climate change

We completed the climate change survey using The Delphic Method and prepared a project sample of 64 for the entire school, both staff and pupils taking part. We spent time with the children, giving them opportunity to do research for themselves. Project facilities were set up and we studied the Oracle at Delphi and what it meant, historically.

The method was also studied and a task was set for the children. Using their skill and judgement, they were asked to help world scientists in their quest to resolve the following question using a secret ballot. They were given 8 choices for years ranging from 2038 to 2178. The results are also to be kept as a secret ballot:

“What year do you believe global warning will rise by 3 degrees Celsius from 1980?”

The results are due back on 30th April. Using frequency tables they will be prepared and predictions calculated. The results are to be sent to the Met Office and Royal Meteorological Society, who have already been contacted, as it is possible this method could be used in reality, given the difficulties of global scepticism and using only scientist’s data.

We also completed a second survey, using Line Graph Method and Met Office scientific data since 1980 and, extrapolating for the above problem, our prediction was 2081. The results and our predictions were drawn onto graphs.
