Diary Entry - November

The aim of our project is to enthuse pupils at Bramhall High School to continue to study chemistry beyond GCSE.

To do this we are holding “fun and exciting” chemistry sessions alongside a chemistry trip and a visit to univerisity or industry for the pupils.

The pupils were initially chosen based on their FFT (target) grades. Ten higher, middle and lower attaining pupils were targetted from each GCSE year group (years 9, 10 and 11). Letters were sent out to their parent/guardians describing the Rolls Royce Scheme and it’s aims.

The chemicals were ordered and the Rolls Royce camcorder arrived. Candice Wilson looked into what opportunities were available for pupils to visit industry and local universities,

On 19th November, after much preparation, the first Rolls Royce pupil event took place. The event was put together by Cath Lawler and delivered by Sandra Humphries (Head of Chemistry), Phil Griffith (Head of KS3), and Candice Wilson to the pupils.  All the pupils made drinks coaster painted with a thermochromic pigment. They were delighted when they changed colour as a hot drink was placed upon them; the best news was they could take them home! As well as this they had to watch their favourite teachers go up in flames (in a controlled manner) as they made methane bubbles on their hands and set light to them. The pupils enjoyed their first session.

Momentum is now building for the Rolls Royce media event on 27th November, the local paper and MP have been contacted and the teachers and pupils are ready to discuss their experiences of their first session.
