“Who Do We Trust?” Science in the Media Project
Our year 9’s have finally finished their KS3 assessments and we have been able to spend this week doing some work on our projects.
I was very pleased to find that the students had remembered many of the criteria needed to recognise good science reporting and were quickly able to move on to reporting and editing tasks.
One of my classes researched recent science developments, wrote scripts and recorded TV news reports.
Then we watched all the reports and awarded points for scientific information, evidence, reliable sources and comments from other scientists etc. Bonus points were awarded if the reports were entertaining. Which many of them were!
The other big event this week was a visit from Sherman Wong from Rolls-Royce.
He agreed to be interviewed by Claire’s year 9 class so that they could practise their camera and editing skills.
They asked many questions about his engineering career, the qualifications needed and how science was involved in real jobs. He gave an excellent account of the skills, qualifications and dedication needed to be successful, as well as bringing a video and a piece of equipment that he’s working on to explain the variety of work available at Rolls-Royce. He was very inspiring and Ellie and Ellen (2 year 9 girls) have already decided they want to go into engineering.
I’m off to Japan now so I’ll tell you more next month.
