Diary Entry - April

Unfortunately the much awaited rocket launch off was spoiled by the weather and has now been delayed until May the 4th when our friendly Rolls-Royce Media team and our resident engineer will help make it all go off with a bang (forgive the pun).

We have made great progress with the manufacture of the inter-active information boxes (‘Salt Cellars’). In late March we were visited by no less than 12 budding Technology teachers at Key Stage 3. Our teams have been busy designing the boxes and the teachers have the interesting brief of responding to our designs with the benefit of the more advanced tools and techniques that are available at the University of Wales Newport.  Alan Rowse the lecturer in charge of Technology at heads this part of the project. The teachers have promised to keep in touch and they are coming back to present their work during late May. We just can’t wait!

The third chapter in our competition effort has launched. This project investigates the potential for a science habitats orienteering trail at our local beauty spot at Cwmcarn and developing a key site for the benefit of biodiversity and the education of all of our pupils. For this we are lucky to co-opt Mary Watkins who does an excellent job working for the Education Centres at DWR Cymru (‘Welsh Water’).

Our teams have been acting as great ambassadors during the month helping year 3 and 4 pupils understanding ramps and helping them with their rocket designs.

Finally we have had an initial visit by the head of the ESTYN team (the Welsh HMI) He quoted the Science Prize as one aspect which immediately stands out in our school – and according to our head he was quite blown away by our STEMM area!

What a month!
