November has been quite a frantic month. Below is a summary of what we have achieved!!
The STEMM and SALT teams have been established and I have been impressed with the committed and responsible attitude of the teams.
The approximate layout of the STEMM base has been decided on and key furniture ordered and is in pipe-line. In a fortuitous meeting I persuaded the head to give over a study area that has arisen because of the recent modernisation of the school to the project. However continuing building work prevents moving into that area.
Key equipment has been ordered and either received or is in pipe-line. It is taking longer to receive certain items than I had envisaged.
Logos have been designed for STEMM and SALT teams. I am pleased with the children’s designs but we are having to chase up the manufacturers because we are still awaiting delivery of the tops.
The main theme for the first campaign has been floated to the school. After some consideration the 45th anniversary of the first moon landing was chosen as the focus of the first campaign and from that the general theme of rocks. Rock competitions were launched for each year group adapted for the topic they were undertaking. Entries were received and are awaiting judgement. Announcements will be made about the winners at the ‘Rock Festival’ planned to celebrate the first campaign.
STEMM teams have been involved in tracking the progress of the project. We have undertaken several business breakfast meetings at 8.30 a.m and nearly everyone attends on time and with a smile! Squash is provided and the team is now nagging for toast as well!
SALT teams have been ‘sent in’ to guide younger children learning science. This is a notable development of the original concept of the SALT teams. They are now involved in ‘covert’ operations i.e working for teachers helping them deliver the curriculum to younger pupils as well as the original ‘overt’ operation of getting younger pupils involved in the school wide project.
STEMM and SALT teams have been doing CREST practical workshops. We had fun making non-newtonian gloop! We also did practical work to do with the rocks project.
The Future
I spent a whole day planning the future and two important connections were made. I have had a pleasant morning with Mike Hales, our supporting engineer from Rolls-Royce Bristol Filton and discussed the details of the programme for the duration of the project. In the afternoon I discussed the project with Alan Rowse, who belongs to STEMNET and is head of technology at University of Wales, Newport. He is keen to help with the design and activation of the information points. The future is bright!
