Diary Entry - October

This month, the team has been working hard to introduce the project to the Year 8s. So far the research is concentrating on investigating exactly what an eco home is; from innovative designs, to successful integration into the natural surroundings of a landscape. As a result of this, designs from around the world have been compiled into a portfolio for reference.october_1

The enthusiasm and professionalism from the students has been encouraging, especially at the press release launch day. Members of the local press were in attendance along with representatives from Rolls-Royce, Grant Gibson and the West Midlands science learning centre, Jo Flynn. Experiments were carried out to assess the optimum applications of the eco systems under investigation and the best way to integrate them into their homes.

The concept of the primary and secondary costs associated with Carbon footprint has been introduced and the team is awaiting a visit from Stoke-On-Trent city council, to explain how Carbon footprint analyses are carried out. With the council’s help, an audit will be completed on the school enabling the children to do the same for their homes. This will not only educate them for this task, but will hopefully provide them with key skills they can use in future, as more and more “green” technology is integrated into homes, workplaces and public buildings.

In the next few weeks, the students will make decisions on what aspects of eco-friendly design and technology they would like in their model homes. Pupils must also decide whether to work on their own or in pairs for this project.
