November has been a very busy month for the Science Prize team at Stepgates. Planned activities and the Rolls-Royce videos offered a great platform to launch the project with children, parents, staff and the local community.
Parents in School Week offered a good opportunity to launch science learning activities which will be promoted through our Rolls-Royce Science Prize project this year.
On Thursday 12th of November parents from Ladybirds and Busy Bees classes joined their children for a ‘Healthy Lunchbox’ workshop. During this workshop parents and children worked together to make a healthy meal and included some of what they had learnt about shapes and nutrition to make some interesting sandwiches to try out.
On Friday the 13th of November parents and children from Grasshoppers and Hawks classes took part in ‘Knex workshop’. Each family built their own car using the Knex and motors. They then raced their cars to see which team had created the fasted car. Their second challenge was to safely secure a toy animal in the car ensuring that it stayed in the car for the dration of the race. During the workshop several visitors came into school to see the workshop in action. These visitors included colleagues from Strodes Colleges, Surrey Family Learning and the Science Learning Centre in Southampton.
An article about these events and other activities relating to the science prize can be found in the Surrey Herald (Thursday 26th of November) and on the Get Surrey website here.
More Knex and cooking activities will be coming up in the Spring Term.
