To ensure the students gain a deeper knowledge and experience of industry, the team plans to link to one of the few scientific employers in the region. This will be developed into a two way partnership, inviting them to visit the college and talk to the students as well as organising a trip to the company so the student can see science in action first hand.
To be selected to take part, students will go through the process of writing an application and setting out their reasons to be selected for the course. This in itself will improve their skills in anticipation of the UCAS process, preparing them for writing their personal statement, or for writing a CV for job applications. “Lab Rats” will offer the opportunity to stretch and challenge the students. The proposed practicals will go beyond the bounds of the A level specifications, thus giving the students experience of the practical applications of science to support theory work done in their studies, as well as introducing them to new areas of science. It will highlight the interdisciplinary nature of modern scientific research. Not only will it be an extension activities for the most able, but students at all levels of ability will be able to work in a new context using a different skill set to the problem-solving demands of their science AS levels. This will provide differentiated activities for all students.
A good wide ranging plan that is easily sustainable. There is good evidence of evaluation.
