The school aims to raise the profile of STEM subjects across Key Stage three and establish the importance of STEM with both pupils and staff within the school by running two projects:
1. Students will work in small teams to design and build a radio-controlled model race cars - from the early stages of planning, through designing, building, testing, refining, and ultimately racing their creations. Students will apply their skills from diverse parts of their learning towards achieving their goal. Students will work as teams, building group-work skills Students will visit Brooklands Museum.
2. Students will work in small teams to develop a Smoothie product. They will research and analyse existing products and visit Innocent’s Fruit Towers, a leading brand in the market of smoothies to meet their product developing team. They will gain valuable information on preserving fruit and dairy products as well as finding about the design process. Each team will also design their marketing material and branding material. They teams will then have the opportunity to make batches of product and sell to the rest of the school.
Both groups of students will have a cross-curricular experience synthesising previous knowledge and covering a large range of subject areas including science, design and technology, mathematics and english.
The team are very clear on what they want to achieve with very good cross curricular links and a strong team supporting the project.
