Develop pupils’ awareness of the ethical dimension of decision-making in science and design and technology by involving the whole school in researching, designing and building a play hut (3 x 2.4m) in the school grounds. As part of science lessons, pupils will gather information about different materials and techniques for building walls and roofs.
Pupils will test and compare the physical properties of various materials. They will also research the environmental and social impacts of the use of these materials, both before, during and after their use. They will evaluate practical, social, environmental and financial factors before choosing the best wall-building and roof-building techniques for constructing a play hut in the school grounds. It is envisaged that the hut will be built by the children themselves using several techniques, e.g. bricklaying, wooden boards, stone, wattle and daub, straw, thatch, insulated panels, etc. The choice will be made by the pupils after they have researched all features of the techniques.
The proposal shows excellent potential with real hands on science for all the pupils involved. A good team has been selected that reflects the skills and knowledge needed to ensure success.
