For John Moar, Head Teacher at Firth Primary School, Orkney, the evening was soon off to a great start when he was invited to the stage to receive The Eden Project's special prize from Tim Smit for the school's environmental project. More success followed when Philippa Forrester later announced Firth had won the £10,000 overall Science Prize runner-up award. John said he now knew what it was like to win an Oscar: 'Fantastic'.
Their project established a 'Sally Garden', an area in the school grounds for growing and harvesting willow to use as an outdoor classroom and for a variety of cross-curricular learning experiences. The school already has plans for how it will invest their award in science education, including exploring the new opportunities for teaching and learning offered through developing renewable energy sources within the school.
More details of Firth's winning project can be found in the Finalists section.
