Each year 50 schools are awarded a Special Merit Award of £1,000. The awards are made to schools that provide a well planned entry that shows innovation and will provide a real benefit to schience teaching and learning. The Special Merit Award winners are used as the shortlist for selecting each year's Finalist teams.
The Special Merit Awards are made three times during the year: at the start of the spring term, at the start of the summer term and at the end of the summer term.
