Our proposal

Topic area of proposal: Generic Issues - Teaching and learning

Briefly, the aim of our proposal is: (50 words)

As a relatively new school, we now want to develop creativity, excellence and enjoyment, gifted & talented and boy-friendly areas of learning.

We intend to do this by developing WOW boxes for different science topics. These would include activities that enrich our science teaching and encourage further investigation. We would also like to develop our reading material by purchasing high quality reference material suitable for different age groups and sets of guided reading material that relate to our science topics.

Pupil type to benefit: All

Age range to benefit from proposal: 3-11

Learning outcomes from our proposal: (50 words)

To stimulate and sustain a passion for science that will continue to result in high standards in science and also impact on standards in other curriculum areas.

Our reasons for developing this particular proposal: (100 words)

As a relatively new school we have focussed on building up essential resources and schemes of work. Now we would like to focus on improving opportunities for gifted and talented, creativity, boy-friendly approaches, excellence and enjoyment and cross-curricular links.

Detailed description of our proposal: (300 words)

We intend to develop WOW boxes for each area of science: materials, forces and life and living processes. We would develop boxes for each Key Stage (two at Key Stage 2), including foundation. These would include activities and resources designed to develop higher order thinking skills and promote independent learning outside the confines of what is expected in National Currriculum Science, for example electromagnets in a forces box. The contents of these boxes would aim to excite and bring a sense of awe and wonder to our science teaching. Each activity would have any neccessary instructions together with key questions to promote learning. They would be accessible to all children in a class when they are studying a particular area.

Alongside this, we aim to raise standards in both literacy and science by providing an appropriate match of non-fiction books to develop children's reading/research skills. These would be used in guided reading sessions to make non-fiction reading have greater relevance and would be available for individual reading and research when a particular topic is being studied.
