Our proposal

Topic area of proposal: Processes and Living Things - Health

Briefly, the aim of our proposal is: (50 words)

We hope to improve the psychological wellbeing of families by encouraging them to take part in sporting activities with their children. We would like the children to experience a wider range of sports to give them the motivation to be fitter and healthier through a range of sports they enjoy. If successful, we would like to offer to roll the scheme out to other schools in our city
The proposal will enable us to meet our commitments under the DCFS Children's Plan

Pupil type to benefit: All

Age range to benefit from proposal: 3-11

Learning outcomes from our proposal: (50 words)

Children will experience a range of sporting activities undertaken with their families

Children will gain emotionally from worthwhile contact with their parents

Children will see how the success of a project they have been involved in can help others in their city and help market it to other schools

Our reasons for developing this particular proposal: (100 words)

Our school has worked hard to develop the emotional literacy of each of our pupils. In ongoing research we had noticed a big difference in the emotional state of children with stay away or career focused fathers. At the time we were seeking ways to address this, the DCFS brought out their ‘Children’s Plan’ which sought to address many of the issues facing children today. We consulted with our local area ‘Every Child Matters’ coordinator who suggested the focus for this proposal

Detailed description of our proposal: (300 words)

We would like to set up a range of activities, initially for our own school, but ultimately open to children from other schools in our area, which would take place outside of school hours at a time convenient for parents to be able to participate. The activities would be planned to ensure that they were ones the whole family could take part in and which were motivational to all involved.

Initially we would need to research the availability of suitable activities in our area and cost them as we feel that if parents are asked to pay for activities we may appeal to a reduced number and so handicap our intended outcomes.

Additionally, we would like to encourage the children to experience a wider range of sports and activities by setting up a Sports Experience Calendar for them. This would be differentiated according to age but would ask the children to take part in six activities through the school year and complete a short survey online and do a report about it which they would present in assembly. This would then act as a motivator to others.

Finally, if our project is successful, we would like initially to meet with three other interested schools in Portsmouth to discuss them taking on the scheme for themselves with the ultimate aim of rolling it out across the city.

Putting our proposal into practice

Outline of how our team would implement our proposal over a period of not more than 24 weeks: (300 words, bulleted lists accepted)

Week 1- 3 Identify relevant activities which fit within the remit of our proposal and add to school calendar

Week 1 – 3 Identify sporting activities that could be used on the Sports Experience Calendars and allocate them to appropriate year groups.

Week 4 Issue letters to parents informing them of the scheme and the upcoming activities and how they can get involved. Advise other schools of the project and invite observers with the aim of them taking on the project once evaluated.

Week 6 After first event hold a feedback meeting with the parents to identify strengths and weaknesses of the proposal. Make changes as necessary.

Week 8 Ask for first reports to children in assembly from Sports Experience Calendars.

Week 8 Evaluate the children’s experiences from the online Likert survey

Week 12 Further meeting with parents to evaluate satisfaction with the scheme and consider extending the programme to include free brief health checks to be provided by the school nurse at drop in times prior to an event

Week 16 Staff involved to meet with a representative from the parents to discuss whether the scheme is sufficiently established to offer to other schools in Portsmouth

Week 17 Potential meeting with heads and PE staff from three local schools to discuss implementation in their schools.

Week 20 Implementation of the scheme in other schools

Week 24 Meeting to assess impact across the city and discuss the future of the project
