Our proposal

Topic area of proposal: Generic Issues - Teaching and learning

Briefly, the aim of our proposal is: (50 words)

We will establish a number of Science Roadshows linked to topics found in the KS1/2 Programme of study. The roadshows will use creative and fun ways to teach the trickier concepts in the Programme of study. Primary teachers will be given training to deliver the roadshows so that the children increase their understanding of these topics AND so that the teachers gain confidence in teaching them.

Pupil type to benefit: All

Age range to benefit from proposal: 3-11

Learning outcomes from our proposal: (50 words)

• Increase the children's understanding of the more difficult topics determined by audit.
• Produce detailed differentiated lesson plans so all abilities make progress.
• Increase the children's excitement of the more conceptually difficult topics, through practical-based learning.
• Increase confidence of teachers delivering these topics.

Our reasons for developing this particular proposal: (100 words)

Helen Geaves has audited the needs of our partner schools and has drawn up a list of national curriculum topics that the schools find difficult to address. We decided to create a number of exciting and relevant roadshows based on topics identified in the audit.

In her role of cross-phase teacher and in consultation with Gwen Calder (AST Science) it was shown that there was a need to help and encourage teachers with ideas on how to teach the these concepts in practical context. We would ensure that regular INSET is established to reinforce the learning objectives.

Detailed description of our proposal: (300 words)

The audit will be evaluated by Helen and Gwen to determine the topics to be addressed.

A series of one-off 2.5 hour roadshows on the chosen topics will be developed and piloted at two of our 21 partner schools. These roadshows will use creative, dramatic and practical activities to illustrate the concepts behind the chosen topics. They will involve games, dance and art alongside more conventional science methods such as practicals, demonstrations and modelling.
The resources for each roadshow (chemicals, equipment, song words/music, drama costumes, worksheets) will be stored centrally at the RLS so that teachers can easily access the materials for each roadshow.

Each roadshow will have a set of teaching instructions and learning outcomes available both as hard copies and online, so that any teacher will be able to present the roadshow to their children.

Initially the roadshows will be taken to the schools by Helen. They will be videoed and the video uploaded onto the RLS virtual learning environment. These videos, themselves will also be able to used as a learning resource by the schools not involved in the pilot programme. The worksheets accompanying the roadshows will be available for use with the video.

INSET sessions will be held at the Royal Latin School to maximise the numbers of teachers who can attend at any one time. They will focus on the scientific concepts identified in each roadshow.

The roadshows will contain differentiated material so that children of all ages and ability will be able access them.

The roadshows will be trialled at two schools over the 24 week project time, before being rolled out to all of our 21 partner schools. Initially the INSET sessions will be aimed at the teachers at the school where the roadshows are initially trialled.

Putting our proposal into practice

Outline of how our team would implement our proposal over a period of not more than 24 weeks: (300 words, bulleted lists accepted)

Week 1-2

  • Meeting to decide initial list of roadshows topics (based on an audit of schools conducted in autumn term 2007).
  • Team to approach partner schools with the list of possible topics and their top five chosen.
  • Team meeting to identify the topics for the 3 roadshows.
  • Clarification of the scope, age range and the degree of differentiation. Team to agree on each persons role in developing the road shows.

Weeks 4-7

  • Team to preliminary design the roadshows. This to include list of activities differentiated by age group and ability.

Week 8

  • Materials, software and equipment ordered including digital video camera for staff training.

Week 9

  • Road shows lesson plans, risk assessments and assessment materials completed.

Weeks 10-11

  • Equipment and materials prepared in trays to take to schools by Janet Pitt.

Week 12

  • Feel the beat trialed at a school, team, school staff and children to evaluate.

Week 13

  • Travelling Through trialled at a school team - school staff and children to evaluate.

Week 14

  • Fizz, Bang Wallop trialled at a school team - school staff and children to evaluate.

Week 15

  • Team to consider evaluations and make adjustments where necessary.

Week 16

  • INSET on running each show offered to all feeder schools with paid cover for their teachers to attend the initial presentation and a further INSET later on in the year.

Weeks 17-18

  • Lesson plans completed with differential activities, risk assessments, worksheets and assessment materials fully illustrated.

Week 19

  • Feel the Beat presented and filmed.

Week 20

  • Travelling Through presented and filmed.

Week 21

  • Fizz, Bang Wallop presented and filmed.

Week 22

  • Roadshows boxed in a form easily transported to schools.
  • Complete with detailed lesson plans, worksheets and assessment materials.
  • Copies of the video prepared, to be sent to schools as required prior to them running the show.

Week 23

  • Details of the prepared shows sent to schools.

Week 24

  • Evaluation by the team of the process.

Monitoring and evaluation

The monitoring procedures we will use during the project are: (200 words, bulleted lists accepted)

  • CHG to observe trial and actual roadshows at different schools.
  • GC to observe roadshow at Buckingham Primary School.
  • Evaluation sheets will be handed out after each roadshow.
  • Teachers attending inset will be given follow-up work related to the roadshows which have visited their school.
  • Ultimately when the roadshows are rolled out to all of our partner schools we will use the local Heads' liaison group meeting to discuss impact of roadshows.

The evaluation procedures we will use at the end of the 25 weeks to check the effectiveness of our project are: (200 words, bulleted lists accepted)

  • There will be continuous evaluation using the evaluation sheets used in the monitoring process. The shows will therefore evolve continually to ensure that they maximise the learning potentials of the children.
  • At the end of the 24-week project HG, GC, CHG and the science coordinator of the other trial school will meet to talk through the effectiveness of the project.
  • Any proposed changes will be considered and adopted before the roadshow is rolled out to our partner schools.
  • Teachers who attended the INSET session will be asked to evaluate the effectiveness of the INSET in relation to their teaching of science.
  • The number of visitors using the roadshow videos will be monitored.
